The SMC-4000 is a legacy product and no longer promoted in the Americas. The SMC-4000 series was a multi-axis Ethernet motion controller designed for use with Yaskawa's SIGMA series and LEGEND digital torque amplifier. Additionally, the Ethernet function allowed for multiple devices to communicate with the controller using a TELNET or MODBUS protocol.

What are the additional pigtail leads on cables SMCCBLAxx and SMCCBLBxx? Posted Date: 10/20/2006 Answer: The pigtail leads on these cables are for connections to the amplifier I/O pins that are not connected to the SMC2000/4000 through the axis connector. These additional leads can be used to tie the available control signals into other customer connections such as a PLC or machine I/O. For instance, if an alarm LED is desired indicating an amplifier alarm, pigtails white/black 2 and black 2 of the SMCCBLAxx cable can be wired into the LED circuit. These signals may also be wired into the general I/O of the SMC controller. See tables with additional details by opening the attached .PDF file. What are cable leads +BA and -BA used for on cable SMCCBL0XX when using the SMC-4000? Posted Date: 04/10/2006 Answer: These leads are connected to pins 18 and 20 of the SMC-4000 axis connector which are both labeled as no connection in the SMC-4000 User's Manual. Cable SMCCBL0XX is also used for the SMC-2000, which had a battery connection on pins 18 and 20. However, when being used with an SMC-4000, leads +BA and -BA should not be connected. Typically, the SMC-2000 has been used with Sigma I amplifiers that have no battery provision of their own, so the SMC-2000 included a battery holder and connections to supply the absolute encoder with power. The SMC-4000 is typically used with Sigma II amplifiers, which do include a provision for an absolute encoder battery, so there is no need to supply battery power from the controller. The attached program is designed to work with the SMC-4000 Demo Unit from Yaskawa (Part Number DEMO4000). The program demonstrates homing, indexing, limit switch handling, jogging, physical input/output control, special labels, and messaging to the terminal. It also demonstrates camming and interpolated motion. If the demo is properly equipped, Ethernet Modbus/TCP communication to Yaskawa's V7 inverter drive can also be demonstrated. Is there a communication driver available for the SMC controllers? Posted Date: 06/25/2013 Answer: Yes, Yaskawa created SMCComm.ocx for use when developing windows applications in VB or C++. The ocx file is used in Yaskawa's YTerm software. It is the blue terminal window at the bottom of the programming screen. (The terminal window does not need to be visible in an application.) The driver provides the following features: - Serial or Ethernet (TELNET) connectivity. - Read and write variables, arrays, and commands. - Upload and download programs and arrays. - Upgrade the controller firmware (serial port only.) - Data logging to file. OCX files are very powerful tools that can be implemented in many ways. Word and Excel can also use an OCX file, eliminating the need for a compiled program. The driver part number is SMCOCX1. The driver comes on CD with documentation and two visual basic examples. The driver and examples were created in Visual Basic 6. Can CAM profiles/recipes reside in the SMC motion controller and how many separate points of data are possible? Posted Date: 01/21/2005 Answer: Yes. CAM profiles can reside in the SMC motion controller. Cams are stored in the special array memory using the ET commands, which can exist in the program or be saved to flash with the BN command. There are 257 (0-256) points/pairs per slave axis available for camming in the Legend-MC and the SMC-2000. The SMC-4000 has1025 (0-1024) points/pairs per axis available for camming. Cam data can be stored in a generic user array, then copied to the cam table at run time, allowing several different cam profiles to be selected. There are 8,000 array elements available in the SMC-3010 and SMC-2000, and 15,000 points available in the SMC-4000. Cam data may be calculated within the SMC application program, or in an Excel worksheet. If using the latter, the resulting data can be arranged into a command format (ET[1]=xxxxx) and copied into YTerm for download as part of a program. Recipe data can also be stored in one or many arrays, and selected by setting an index value at run time.
