Why is the CPU load high when there is minimal logic executing? Posted Date: 02/05/2019 Answer: One common cause of the CPU load being higher than expected is caused by using a custom Function Block that uses a large structure connected as a VAR_INPUT instead of a VAR_IN_OUT. When a variable is declared as a VAR_INPUT, the MPiec Controller copies the entire contents of the structure into the Function Block every scan. Other programming languages refer to this technique as “Passing by Value.” In this situation, the Function Block does not have the ability to alter the contents of the original data. When declaring a variable as VAR_IN_OUT, the MPiec Controller passes a pointer to the original location of the variable rather than a copy of the data. Other programming languages refer to this technique as “Passing by Reference.” The pointer is an internal 32 bit value, which is significantly more efficient than copying the entire contents every scan. This method also gives the Function Block the ability to alter the contents of the structure variable. To show this example in practice, the attached document shows two scenarios. The first scenario scans a Function Block with a large structure as a VAR_INPUT and results in a high CPU load. The other scenario shows the same structure as a VAR_IN_OUT and has no impact on the CPU load. The large structure is an array of an array creating 500,000 LREAL’s. There is nothing else in the program, the custom Function Blocks have no code. Why does Vipa remote I/O fail to update when it has a connection status of 0x1000 (connected) or 0x320 (deleted configuration)? Posted Date: 09/05/2017 Answer: If the Vipa Ethernet coupler was previously configured and then modules are added or changed, you must perform an online save through its web page before they will function correctly. If the new configuration is not saved, the Vipa Ethernet coupler will flash the SF and MS red LED’s when the controller connects. The I/O status variable in the MotionWorks IEC project will show a status of 0x1000 (connected) or 0x320 (deleted configuration) but the I/O will not update. To save the configuration on the Vipa Ethernet coupler: Open the Vipa web page by typing the IP address into the browser’s address bar. Note: Disconnect or stop any MPiec controller Ethernet connection to the Vipa bus coupler. Navigate to the Configuration tab and press the Save button. After saving the configuration, the Vipa Ethernet coupler must be powered down for at least 20 seconds, and then powered back up. If the power is short cycled, the Vipa Ethernet coupler will not power up. Why does the controller show the “Axis count exceeded allowable limit” alarm when the configuration contains an allowed number of axes? Posted Date: 02/26/2018 Answer: The controller counts all configured axes and any axes it discovers when the CNFG switch is on. To avoid adding discovered axes to this count, set the CNFG switch to off before the controller is powered on, or disconnect the additional axes. Why does one or more of the analog outputs fail to output any value other than the maximum of 10 Volts? Posted Date: 02/19/2018 Answer: There is an error in older firmware versions that cause analog output channels with a negative offset to only output the maximum voltage. Use firmware version 3.1.1.1 for all MP2300 type controllers and firmware version 3.5.0 and higher for all other controllers to correct the issue. The 3.5.0 release will be available in April 2018. Why does Alarm Code '3407 0204 - Unable to set configured network default gateway' appear and how can it be remedied? Posted Date: 11/12/2013 Answer: The Default Gateway provides a route for the MPiec controller to use when communicating with devices on remote networks. The Default gateway address is used when the controller is on a different subnet than the remote device. Solution: If the MPiec will not be on a network, set the Default Gateway to be the same as the controller IP Address to avoid the warning "3407 0204 - Gateway not found". If the MPiec will be on a network, set the Default Gateway based on the router/switch settings. Use the built-in web server of the MPiec controller to configure the IP address and Gateway. - Navigate to the MPiec controllers IP address using Internet Explorer and click on Login... - (If using Internet Explorer 10 or greater, see other FAQs to set the browser in Compatibility Mode.) - Login: Admin (case-sensitive) - Default Password differs slightly depending on product: -- MP2300Siec --> MP2300S -- MP2310iec --> MP2310 -- MP2600iec --> MP2600 -- MP3200iec --> MP3200 1) Navigate to Ethernet Config page from the menu tree. 2) Under Global Settings, enter the Default Gateway. 3) Click Update Global Settings 4) Reboot the controller. Why can’t I update my MP23xxiec controller to version 3 firmware? Posted Date: 10/26/2015 Answer: IF YOU SEE THE “Firmware Update Failed!” SCREEN DO NOT REBOOT or the controller can become unusable. Click on “update the firmware” and select the same firmware file that was on the controller. Version 3 firmware for the MP23xxiec controllers contains extra code to present a modern web interface. This has caused the version 3 firmware to consume more memory than the version 2 firmware. Some users will find that they cannot upgrade the firmware if a project is stored on the controller. Also, we have found that some archives created in version 2 cannot be loaded onto version 3 controllers. To upgrade your MP23xxiec controller to version 3: 1. Make sure you have a copy of the project. You may need to load this project manually. 2. Create an archive of the project and save it. 3. Delete all user files (the project) from the controller. 4. Upgrade the firmware. 5. Install the archive. 6. If the archive installation fails, load the project manually, by opening the project, opening Hardware Configuration, saving the configuration to the controller and rebooting, and compiling and downloading the project. While online with MotionWorks IEC and debugging an MPiec controller, what does the error Operand not implemented or area exceeded mean? Posted Date: 03/06/2014 Answer: Operand not implemented or area exceeded! occurs when the IEC application attempts to access a located variable (%I, %M, or %Q address) which is outside the range of all I/O Driver's memory configuration. This error can be generated even if the variable is not used in the program, as in the case when viewing the variable definition worksheet in debug mode. The solution is to confirm that all variables with an address defined are within the defined range for one of the configured I/O drivers. Check the IO_Configuration window to see the address ranges for all I/O Drivers. When moving away from a overtravel condition, the Sigma V servo system seems to prevent torque or rapidly enable/disable as the axis is moving out of the overtravel region. Can this situation be prevented? Posted Date: 10/06/2011 Answer: When the servo is controlled in position or speed mode, the ServoPack will not command torque the direction of an active overtravel. To completely prevent this condition when moving out of a overtravel region, use the MC_TorqueControl function block with a velocity limit and direction to move out of the overtravel region and prevent the torque "cutout" behavior from occurring. Otherwise, to reduce the torque cutout effects, turn off the controller feed forward setting, parameter 1310, which makes the condition more noticeable. What web browser technology is supported by the MPiec Series Controllers? Posted Date: 01/02/2018 Answer: The MPiec controllers have evolved over their lifespan. The first versions only supported Internet Explorer with the classic interface. A modern interface was added and fully supported in firmware release 3.2.0 to conform to more modern browsers. The classic interface is the only interface supported by Internet Explorer and is available in all firmware versions. The attached chart shows the supported interface - firmware version combinations. What is the warranty determination for new product? Posted Date: 05/22/2014 Answer: 1. Yaskawa America, Inc (YAI, Drives & Motion Division (hereinafter D&M), warrants at the time of shipment, new and unused product sold by D&M shall be free from defects in materials and workmanship. D&M warrants that for a period of one (1) year from the date the product is first used by Buyer, or 18 months from the date of shipment, whichever occurs first, if any product or part is found by D&M to be defective, D&M will, at its sole discretion and as Buyer's exclusive remedy, either repair, replace or return the purchase price paid to D&M; provided that the subject product is used under normal conditions for which it was designed and installed, operated and maintained in accordance with D&M's instructions and in accordance with generally accepted industrial practices. Products repaired or replaced during the warranty period shall be covered by the foregoing warranty for the remainder of the original warranty period or ninety (90) days from date of the repair or shipment of the replacement, whichever is longer. What is the memory capacity for the MP2000 IEC Controllers? Posted Date: 01/05/2011 Answer: The capacity of the controller is 8 MB of flash memory and 32 MB of RAM. The controller will come from the factory with some of that memory used for the operating system and firmware. The figure attached to this document (.JPG) is from the Hardware Configuration software describes the memory allocation of the controller in an out of the box scenario. It's important to note that the controller pre-allocates all the IEC memory that will never be allocated to an application program, so the pie chart will show about 1/3 used regardless of how many axes or how many variables are created. The remainder of the memory is available for either data files, such as cam files, or data logging files.
