It’s common to see training classes that offer CEUs and others that offer PDHs. But have you ever wondered what they are or what the difference is?
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are awarded to a person for successfully completing a formal training program, frequently to further one’s professional knowledge. One CEU is awarded for the successful completion of ten hours of training.
1 hour of training = 0.1 CEU
10 hours of training = 1.0 CEU
Universities or corporations that are accredited to offer CEUs must go through a rigorous accreditation program. Yaskawa America Inc. Drives and Motion Division has been accredited as an Authorized Provider by the International Accreditors of Continuing Education and Training (IACET). Yaskawa demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/IACET Standard which is recognized internationally as a standard of good practice. As a result of this Authorized Provider status, Yaskawa is authorized to offer IACET CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standard.
Professional Development Hours (PDHs) are awarded to a person based on contact hours of a presentation or training class. PDHs are frequently required by organizations to maintain one’s professional license or certification. One PDH is awarded for one contact hour of training.
1 hour of training = 1 PDH
FAQs:
Q: Are the two interchangeable?
A: They can be. In most cases, organizations requiring PDHs will convert a person’s CEUs based on a 0.1 CEU to 1 PDH ratio. This can also be said for converting PDHs to CEUs. Each organization can be slightly different, so it’s best to confirm with the organization you work with that they allow this practice.
1 hour of training = 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH
So don’t worry if a class provides either CEUs or PDHs; the most important thing is the opportunity the training offers you to build your professional skills and further your career!
